Adomavičius wins twice, but Tovilavičius takes the title

23 September 2019

The final pair of races in the Baltic Touring Car Championship saw Julius Adomavičius and Džiugas Tovilavičius in a head-to-head fight for the title after the DHL Racing CUPRA of Ramūnas Čapkauskas was excluded for a technical infringement after the Qualifying. The two races, at the auto24ring at Pärnu in Estonia, saw both victories go to Adomavičius while his championship rival seemed content to play the numbers game rather than push for outright wins.
In Race 1, Adomavičius took a lights-to-flag victory in the GSR Motorsport car to keep his hopes of taking the title alive. All of the top four places were filled by Volkswagen Golf GTI cars, with Russia’s Grigoriy Burlutskiy finishing second for Carville Racing and championship leader Tovilavičius completing the podium for the Skuba Racing Team.
Adomavičius almost made the win look easy, crossing the finish line nearly three seconds clear of Burlutskiy, who’d moved into second place on the opening lap and then opened up a gap from Tovilavičius. Behind the trio, Kęstutis Stasionis in the Noker Racing Team Volkswagen, Andrey Yushin’s CUPRA and the Artman Racing Honda Civic FK7 of Peeter Peek finished fourth, fifth and sixth.
Race 2 then saw Burlutskiy start from pole ahead of Adomavičius and Tovilavičius, with the Honda of Peek failing to make the start. The first few corners were fairly frantic, with the leading trio running three abreast at one point. Adomavičius took the lead on the opening lap, although Burlutskiy reclaimed the position on Lap 2.
Lap 4 then saw the final change of leader when Adomavičius dived up the inside of Burlutskiy to lead once again. Tovilavičius seemed happy enough to sit in third place ahead of Stasionis and Yushin, aware that the championship position was very much in his favour. The remainder of the ten-lap race was then processional, with the podium a repeat of that from Race 1.
So while Adomavičius took both race wins, it was Tovilavičius who was victorious in the championship. The pair finished the season separated by 12 points, with Čapkauskas third, a further 47 points adrift.
