Golf GTI TCR reaches 236 kph on Russian iced-lake

18 March 2019

A Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR reached 236 kph during a speed record attempt on the Baikal lake in Russia.
Ilya Kashin was at the wheel of the UGMK Motorsport car, the very same that Roman Golikov drove in last year’s TCR Russia series.
The record base was controlled by the stewards of the Russian Automobile Federation according to the FIA speed record rule-book and using time-keeping equipment verified by the FIA.
Competitors had to achieve the maximum speed on the 1km base, with standing start and rolling start, in both directions. The maximum speed was also measured using GPS equipment.
Kashin was timed at more than 100 kph with the standing start, more than 220 kph with the rolling start and achieved a maximum speed of 236 kph.
The only car faster than the Golf TCR during the event was an AWD Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 Trail Hawk at 100, 257 and 280 kph respectively.
