One win apiece for Andersen and Magnussen at Ring Djursland

26 September 2020

In TCR Denmark’s Race 1 at Ring Djursland, Martin Andersen took his second win of the season, while the second race saw Jan Magnussen claiming his maiden victory in the championship. The leader of the standings, Kasper H. Jensen finished twice on the podium and so stretched his leading margin to 22 points over Andersen and 32 ahead of Nicolai Sylvest.
In the opening race, Jacob Mathiassen made a superb start from second on the grid to pass both pole-sitter Magnussen and Andersen going into Turn 1. Mathiassen initially pulled out a healthy lead over Andersen, but the Hyundai steadily began to catch the Alfa Romeo and the lead changed hands in the space of half a lap before Andersen finally grabbed it and began to pull away.
After that, Mathiassen’s pace faded and Magnussen passed him for P2, while René Povlsen made contact with Casper Elgaard on lap 13; the incident broke the Honda’s steering and the safety car was deployed while the Civic was recovered.
Racing resumed with under five minutes remaining and Mathiassen was clearly struggling; the Alfa Romeo dropping down the field before eventually retiring on lap 19. Andersen took the chequered flag a little over two seconds clear of Magnussen with Jensen holding off the challenge of Sylvest to complete the podium places.
Mathiassen did not make the grid for Race 2, while Kenn Bach started from the pole but led for only a few hundredths metres before he was passed by Michael Markussen and Jensen. In lap 2, Sylvest overtook Michael Carlsen for P4 and then pushed wide Bach to move into P3. Race 1 winner Andersen advanced to P5, but then made a mistake and dropped down to fifth behind Carlsen and Kim Lund.
In the final stages, Markussen’s lead was threatened by Magnussen, while Sylvest was chasing Jensen for P3; behind them Andersen recovered the fifth place ahead of Lund and Carlsen.
Suddenly, with three laps to go, Markussen’s Peugeot stopped on the track and so Magnussen inherited the victory from Jensen, Sylvest and Andersen.
The TCR Denmark will return into action in two weeks at Parborg Park.
