Wong and Hui confirm supremacy in the long race

29 September 2018

They might struggle in the sprint races, but Alex Hui and Sunny Wong know very well how to manage the long ones. At Ningbo International Speedpark the pair in the TeamWork Motorsport Volkswagen Golf GTI won TCR China’s Race 3, making three victories out of three in the 60-minute races held so far.
At the start, Eric Lam took the lead in the Son Veng Racing Golf GTI, followed by the other Volkswagen cars of Zhu Zhen You (CUS Racing), Hui and Li Lin (LEO Racing), while pole sitter Filipe De Souza went wide at Turn 1 in his T.A. Motorsport Audi RS3 LMS and rejoined at the back of the field.
During the first lap, Zhu overtook Lam for the lead and tried to pull away. After ten minutes drama struck the MacPro Racing Honda Civic #88 that had won both the sprint races, as Henry Ho pitted to change a front tyre.
Seven minutes later, the second MacPro Racing Honda ran into trouble too, as Kevin Tse went off at the last turn with a flat tyre and retired while he was fighting with Li Lin for fourth. In the meantime, Hui overtook Lam for second.
When the pit stop window opened, Li Lin was the first one to stop, while Hui and Lam were the last ones. The strategy paid off for TeamWork as Sunny Wong took the lead with a margin of 8 seconds over Li Lin; Lam was third, while Zhou’s CUS Racing Golf was chased by De Souza’s Audi.
The fight for third resulted in a collision between Zhou and Lam; De Souza benefited from the situation to take third and then moved up to second when the pace of Li Lin’s Golf faded in the final moments.
Wong crossed the line as the winner, from De Souza, Zhou, Tian Li Ying (HE Racing Golf), Li Lin and Eurico De Jesus in the surviving MacPro Racing Honda.
The victory helped Hui and Wong to reduce their gap in the standings to 9 points behind the MacPro Racing Honda #88.
TCR China will resume next week, on Thursday and Friday at Shanghai International Circuit, where it will run together with TCR Asia.
