New Compensation Weight system for TCR competition

New Compensation Weight system for TCR competition

16 March 2020

The Technical Department of the WSC Group has reviewed the Compensation Weight system that will be applied with immediate effect to all the TCR-sanctioned series and races worldwide, with the exception of the WTCR and of the Endurance races of minimum 2 hours; the latters are regulated by the TCR Technical Bulletin #1/2020.
“The reason for this change,” explained WSC president Marcello Lotti, “was to prevent teams and drivers from tricking and posting slower lap times during the races. We thought that focusing on the fastest Qualifying lap times would better reflect the performance of the cars. On top of this we have also decided to restrict the application of the Compensation Weight to the first half of the Qualifying results, in order not to penalize too much the drivers who are in the second part of the time sheet.”

The CW algorithm now takes into consideration only the cars classified in the first half of the Qualifying results sheet, and calculates the average delta lap-time between each car and its predecessor within this group.
To summarize, all the cars of the same model included in this group get the same CW, except when the gap from the fastest time is outside the gap calculated by the parameters of the automatic formula; in this case the CW is reduced by 50%. All the cars classified in the second half of the results timesheet are not given CW.
In the first event of the season all cars start without CW, which is then recalculated after each event according to the Qualifying results that takes into account the fastest time set by each car in the event’s Qualifying (irrespectively if this was set in different sessions, or in Q1 or Q2).
The maximum CW is set to 60kg. 30kg of CW are imposed on their first appearance to all drivers or new model cars that join after the first event of the season and to drivers who change model of car during the season.
Just like in 2019, the WSC Technical Department will publish CW Bulletins after each event, while the updated CW tables of each series will be available HERE
