Rob Huff wins the 2020 TCR Scandinavia title

10 October 2020

Rob Huff left it to the final weekend of the 2020 TCR Scandinavia championship season to win his first race for Lestrup Racing Team and encored from the reversed grid in Race 3 to take the drivers’ title, winning by seven points over PWR Racing’s Robert Dahlgren.
Huff made the best launch from the outside of the front row in a wet Race 1 to take the lead Dahlgren, with Huff’s teammate Oliver Söderström making his way up to second position.
Behind the top three was Andrea Ahlberg, holding back at that point championship leader Tobias Brink, who was struggling for pace with full weight onboard his Audi.
On lap 7, Dahlgren was able to get ahead of Söderström, but didn’t have the pace in the wet conditions to do anything about Huff, who won by over ten seconds, and took the lead of the drivers’ standings by three points.
In Race 2, Dahlgren started from pole ahead of Brink, Söderström, and Huff. The latter made a good start, while there was trouble behind as the late-race entry Daniel Haglöf made contact with Söderström, spinning him into Ahlberg, with both drivers out of the race.
Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky then hit Mikael Karlsson in avoidance, plunging him into the gravel trap with the safety car deployed. At the restart, Haglöf was quickly trying to fight Huff for third, but an ill-fated move around the outside saw him fall back into the clutches of Hannes Morin, with Huff able to make headway and catch up to Brink. Huff overtook Brink for second on lap eight, but in the dry, didn’t have the pace to catch Dahlgren’s CUPRA, who took the win by nearly six seconds, with Brink handed the final podium spot after Åhlin-Kottulinsky, who had overtaken Brink with a slight push at the final turn with seven laps to go, was given a five-second penalty.
In the dramatic Race 3, Haglöf started from pole position for the reversed grid race, but fell behind newcomer Kevin Engman at the start, though Engman was soon judged to have jumped the start and was given a 20-second time penalty.
Huff leapt from seventh to fourth, passing title rival Brink, who then lost further ground when he dived down the inside of Åhlin-Kottulinsky, making contact and allowing Dahlgren past the pair of them into fifth.
Morin and Haglöf, ran wide at the start of lap 7, allowing Huff straight through into second, who then caught and passed Engman for the lead a lap later and began to pull a gap, while Dahlgren threaded his way through, also passing Engman for second on lap ten. There was no stopping Huff now though, who went on to win the race by three seconds, and claim the title by seven points over Dahlgren, while last year’s runner-up Brink slipped to third overall, 25 points behind.
